Measurement Guide

We measure each item in specific ways; you can see the details below. If there is a specific measurement which you would like to know, which is not included in our standard measurement guide, do please let us know and we can provide you with extra details. Of course, you have the comfort of our swift, no-quibble delivery and returns service; and you can also visit our showroom or see us at events if they are local to you. Please note that all our measurements are supplied, unless otherwise advised, in good old British inches

How do we measure our coats?

On our website we are stating the coat's actual chest or bust measurement (in inches). We think this give you the best information with which to make a decision on sizing. Or, if it's a secondhand modern item with a label we will use the coat's label size but will usually also give you actual measurement too because label sizing can vary brand to brand. For example, a Mears 36" coat and a Caldene 36" coat can vary significantly in fit.

How we measure the coat: We button it up, lay it flat, and simply measure right across the fabric over the chest/bust area. We then double that for the circumference. So, if it measures 18" across the front, we double that to tell you it's a 36" coat. If it's 20" across the bust, it's a 40" coat.

On each listing we typically give you 4 coat measurements, as follows;

  1. The length of the coat down the back, from the base of the collar (ie excl the collar) to bottom of the hem
  2. The measurement from shoulder seam to shoulder seam at the point of shoulder
  3. The length of the outside sleeve from shoulder to cuff
  4. The chest measurement is taken by measuring the coat laid flat and then doubling.

How do I know my size?

Get a friend - or your butler - to pass a fabric tape measure around your back, bring it under your armpits and over your bosom or chest for a man. Don't pull it tight - just let it lay flat over your bust / chest and take that measurement in inches (or cm).

Can you help me with coat suggestions?

Yes. Knowing your chest or bust size is a really good start. If you then tell us a bit about your body shape ie height, whether you're curvy or quite straight, waist measurement etc. then we can start to match up coats.

Boots

  1. Circumference, which is taken around the outside of the boot an inch down from the top.
  2. Because vintage boots often do not carry shoe size, we give you the measurement underneath the boot from the point of the heel to the longest part of the toe
  3. The boot height is taken from the top of the boot at the back to the bottom of the heel.
